Why Study Autism?

According to the National Autistic Society, the UK has around 700,000 people on the autistic spectrum. Whilst there is no official count of these statistics, it is deemed by many organisations to be a reliable estimate – it is highly likely that the figures are higher than this. This figure represents more than 1% of the population. The rates of diagnosis have increased drastically over the past decade, and this is a good thing – it means there is more awareness and help available to the people who need it.

Autism is a spectrum disorder. It is a neurological condition, which means that the brain in question will work in a different manner to one that does not have autism. There is no cure for autism, and people with the condition are affected with different difficulties, severities, challenges, and symptoms.

A person with autism will see the world in a vastly different way to somebody who does not have the condition. Whilst the impact that autism has on an individual will vary from person to person, there are many common traits to be aware of. These traits are communication issues, social difficulties, and problems with interaction.

Receiving a diagnosis is not always easy, and for the diagnosis to be made, there are specific criteria to be met. This criterion is known as the ‘Triad of Impairment’.

We will introduce you to the three very effective and popular therapies that are available to ASD individuals, these being Occupational Therapy, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), and Speech & Language Therapy.

Our in-depth Advanced Autism Diploma will teach you all you need to know about autism. You will learn what is, the symptoms, diagnosis, techniques and treatments, gender differences, popular strategies, and interventions. We will inform you on available treatments, specialist adjustments, specific therapies, and the differences between children and adults with autism.

This course will equip you for either working or volunteering with ASD individuals, or to gain a deeper understanding the condition when living or working with a person who has autism. We will clearly explain the concepts, provide case studies, and define the terminology used.
